With very few exceptions, everyone is on the lookout for that one person they can spend the rest of their life with. Sometimes people get incredibly lucky and find that person early on in their life, but that’s not very common. Some people spend their whole life looking for that person. For those who are still looking, it can be easy to fall prey to a sense of urgency. Trying too hard to find the perfect person could lead to some pretty poor choices. Not every relationship is destined to work. Here are a few signs you’re in a toxic relationship to look out for.

Jealousy is a pretty common emotion for anyone in a relationship. It’s alright to feel nervous, but letting those feelings get the best of us isn’t healthy. If a significant other is getting angry or trying to prevent certain social interactions because of jealousy, there might be a serious problem. If a boyfriend or girlfriend has issues with certain friends or makes a point of being negative about certain relationships, it might be time to rethink the relationship.

Hiding feelings is just plain not healthy. Having to hide certain emotions at certain times might be a sign of a controlling mate. This never works out to a good relationship and should be a big red flag for anyone in a serious relationship.

Assigning blame is reasonable in some cases. If someone in a relationship does something wrong, they should own up to it and take the blame for what they’ve done. If one person is blaming the other for things they haven’t done or couldn’t have done it can cause a lot of tension. It’s not alright to feel like everything is one person’s fault. There are always two sides to a problem.

Positivity is something every relationship should have. When one person in the relationship feels as though they can’t remain positive because of the other there could be a serious problem. If a relationship doesn’t make a person feel good about themselves it isn’t a healthy relationship.

Control is something every person should have over their own life. When it starts to feel as though one person has control over everything in the relationship, it’s time to call it quits and move on.
